We help organisations build fair, safe, and innovative workplace cultures.

Just Culture will change the way you think about human error within the workplace to improve your company safety, systems processes, and employee satisfaction.

Just Culture is about creating a just and fair workplace. A just culture is a culture where people are not punished for decisions and actions that are commensurate with their skills, experience and training. It recognises that people generally come to work wanting to do a good job. It also recognises that we are human, and we will make mistakes from time to time, even when we are trying our best. Human error, while it can be minimised, is inevitable and is seen in Just Culture as an opportunity for organisational learning and systemic improvement. However, people are held accountable for malevolent behaviour or acts of gross recklessness.

By taking a non-punitive approach Just Culture encourages staff to report issues, near misses, and particularly their own errors and mistakes. That allows leaders to identify and fix the underlying systemic issues, the things that make the next person more likely to make the same error.

As a leader, if your staff aren't telling you about things that go wrong, that doesn't mean everything is perfect, more likely they're just not telling you about them.

Growing a Just Culture takes time, sustained commitment from leadership, and follow through, but brings significant benefits in a whole host of areas including team performance, staff turnover, safety, wellbeing, continuous improvement, and the bottom line.

Objections to Just Culture from Regulators & Lawyers

One of the challenges when implementing a Just Culture is addressing objections from regulators and lawyers, especially in highly regulated industries. These objections can often arise from misconceptions of what Just Culture is or perceived incompatibilities with other needs. It can also come from the challenges Just Culture can present to the presuppositions held by some lawyers.

This article talks about some of these objections and how they can be addressed.
